Working Group Description

Members of the Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology working group are broadly interested in the design, synthesis, and development of new drug molecules. Within this broad area, most of the faculty are primarily involved in organic synthesis. However, faculty are also developing and using chemical probes to characterize cellular signaling events. Still others are pursuing in silico approaches to drug molecule design. Many faculty are members of the Discovery Park Oncological Sciences Center, the Birck Nanotechnology Center, the Bindley Biosciences Center, and the Purdue University Center for Cancer Research. Members of the working group pursue research in the following areas:

  1. Design and synthesis of potential antiviral drugs
  2. Design and synthesis of potential anticancer and chemopreventive agents
  3. Isolation and characterization of natural products that may function as cancer preventive agents or therapeutics
  4. Design and synthesis of agents that hold promise for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders, addiction, psychiatric disorders, and other disorders of the central nervous system
  5. Identification of potential drugs via high throughput screening.
  6. Development of chemical probes to characterize cellular signaling events
  7. In silico drug molecule design
