Working Group Description

Members of the Cancer Research working group are focused on several elements of the cancer drug discovery process. Most faculty in this group are also members of the Purdue University Center for Cancer Research, which has been designated by the National Cancer Institute as one of only a handful of Cancer Centers that do not operate in partnership with a clinical oncology facility. Affiliation with the Purdue University Center for Cancer Research facilitates interactions with other cancer researchers on campus and permits subsidized access to numerous campus technical resources. Many faculty are also members of the Discovery Park Oncological Sciences Center, the Birck Nanotechnology Center, and the Bindley Biosciences Center, which facilitate and support multidisciplinary cancer research projects. Faculty in the Cancer Research working group pursue research in the following areas:

  1. Regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation in normal and tumor cells
  2. Cancer biomarker identification and characterization
  3. Design and synthesis of potential anticancer and chemopreventive agents
  4. Identification and characterization of cancer signaling pathways and cancer drug targets
  5. Pharmacology of cancer chemotherapeutics and chemopreventive agents
  6. Isolation and characterization of natural products that may function as cancer preventive agents or therapeutics
  7. Molecular mechanisms of chemosensitivity, chemoresistance, and radioresistance
