Links to useful information about the application and admission process

While the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology administers its own graduate program, including the admissions process, the processing of applications (prior to their review for admission into this program) is centrally administered by the School of Pharmacy for the sake of efficiency. The School of Pharmacy staff maintain much useful information about the admissions and application process for all the graduate programs in the Shool on the school web site. That web page also has a link to answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs) as well as information provided by the University Graduate School about the graduate program application and admission process.

Please see the list of basic academic requirements for eligibility for admission into the MCMP programs and a partial list of required components for the application, by degree and nationality status. Students that do not meet the basic eligibility requirements should not apply.

The Application Components

For orderly processing of your application, the following items must be completed and/or submitted to us (see Submission Address, below):

  • Graduate Admissions Application form
  • Personal Statement (of Purpose)
  • Official college transcripts
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores
  • TOEFL scores (required only for all international students whose country's primary language is not English)
  • Application Fee

Each of these is described in more detail below.

Graduate Admissions Application Form

An on-line graduate admissions application form is provided by the Purdue University Graduate School.

Personal Statement (of Purpose)

The personal statement should include information about your research interests, career plans, and reasons why you would like to pursue a Ph. D. degree in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at Purdue University. The personal statement is a good place to explain anything unusual that appears in your application materials, whether it is exceptionally good or bad. Your statement should be approximately one page in length, but no more than two or three pages. Sending a complete resume usually is not helpful to us.

There is no form for submitting the personal statement. Electronic submission of the statement is most conveniently done by one of two methods: (1) as an email attachment in word processor format (Microsoft Word is preferred) or as a PDF file, or (2) as plain text, either submitted as a file attached to email or included directly in email. For the email address for submission, see "Submission Address" indicated below.

Here are some additional instructions about this statement from the Graduate School.

Official College Transcripts

An official transcript from each the colleges you have attended must be submitted with your application. These must be sent from the college or university and cannot be submitted by the student. A form for requesting official copies of transcripts is available from the Purdue Graduate School. It is not required that you use this form, and it is provided simply for your convenience. Many colleges and universities now have on-line forms for requesting transcripts which may be more convenient.

Letters of Recommendation

Application to the MCMP graduate program requires three letters of recommendation from individuals that (a) know the applicant well enough to evaluate their chance of success in the MCMP graduate program and subsequent career and (b) are knowledgeable, from their own personal experience, of what is important for such success. Typically the set of referees must include the applicant's research advisor(s). The Purdue Graduate School provides a form for letters of recommendation. While use of this form is not required, it is strongly recommended. Letters should be submitted directly by the referees not by the student. Letters may be mailed or sent by FAX. Email letters of recommendation may be helpful for speeding up a preliminary review of an application, but a signed paper copy of the letter also must be submitted to us in order for us to finalize our review of the application.

GRE Scores

Scores for the three parts of the basic GRE are required: Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical. The GRE subject exam is recommended by not required.

We must receive official notice of test scores as communicated to us by the testing agency. The applicant may submit test scores to us via mail, FAX, or email, but we cannot evaluate your application until we have obtained official notice of the scores.

TOEFL Scores

All applicants whose nationality is a country where the primary language is not English must complete the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and have the scores submitted to us.

We must receive official notice of test scores as communicated to us by the testing agency. The applicant may submit test scores to us via mail, FAX, or email, but we cannot evaluate your application until we have obtained official notice of the scores.

Application Fee

The University Graduate School imposes an application fee, which must be paid prior to our review of an application. This fee can be paid by credit card, either at the time of submission of the on-line graduate application form or after it has been submitted. Credit card payments can be made on-line only. If not paid on-line, the fee must be sent to the graduate school in the form of a check or money order payable in US dollars. For more details about paying this fee, see the Graduate School admissions FAQ. This fee cannot be waived or deferred (see the Pharmacy School graduate admissions FAQ.)

Important: When submitting application materials or communicating about your application with the Graduate Programs Coordinator, please indicate that you are applying for admission into the graduate program in MCMP, since that individual processes applications for several programs.

Application Deadlines

Applications can be submitted at anytime, but international applicants require extra time for processing and generation of visas. Deadlines for international student applications are indicated in the Pharmacy School graduate admissions FAQ.

Application Review Process

We would like to review your application within a few days of its submission, however, it must be complete and the application fee must be paid before it can be evaluated. The evaluation of eligible applications is done by at least one member of the departmental graduate admissions committee which consists of several professors in the department. Review of applications to MCMP is done on a "rolling" basis, meaning that they are reviewed and offers made (when appropriate) as the applications are received. Applications that are denied admission are sent written notice of this immediately. Applications that result in an offer of admission require some additional processing, and there can be a slight delay of a few days in getting such formal offer letters sent. Highly meritorious applications may be nominated for one or more University Fellowships. Individuals awarded such fellowships are contacted separately about that matter subsequent to their admission.
